Business is booming at BC farmers markets, thanks to support from both new and long-time customers.
A recent report states that over half of participants visit a BC farmers market two to three times each month, while 20 per cent came as new customers.
Participating in the The Provincial Report on the Economic and Social Benefits Assessment of BC Farmers Markets by the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets (BCAFM) and Dr. David Connell of the University of Northern British Columbia were 9,800 shoppers from 33 BC farmers’ markets.
“Although people know that farmers’ markets are a great place to buy fresh, local food, the results of this study demonstrate the incredible growth of markets since 2006 when we supported a similar study,” said Jon Bell, president of BCAFM.
“This project builds upon the results of a similar study we did in 2006. The results are significant for many reasons. They highlight the improving viability of local food systems, increasing demand for new farmers, and pressing need to protect the agricultural land base,” added Connell.
According to the study, customers considered nutritional content, local production, seasonality and animal welfare to be their top concerns when shopping in farmers’ markets.
Since 2006, BC farmers markets have grown by 62 per cent, and have sold 147 per cent more goods in 2012 compared to 2006.
“Farmers markets continue to serve as the face of agriculture in BC. There has been significant growth in the number and vitality of farmers’ markets in BC and it is important to understand not only what they contribute but also how much they contribute to local neighbourhoods, cities, and towns,” explained Elizabeth Quinn, executive director of BCAFM.
